Why Intellectual Wellness Is Important

Intellectual wellness encourages learning. By embracing our natural curiosity and exploring new ideas we become more mindful and well-rounded.

Intellectual wellness is having the ability to stay open to new ideas, think critically, recognize one’s creative abilities and continue to find ways to expand knowledge and skills.  It is embracing curiosity with a desire to learn and expand your mind, having the ability to problem solve, and making informed decisions to manage daily life. Intellectual wellness can be developed through a variety of ways, including academics, cultural involvement, community involvement and various personal hobbies.

The Route to Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual Wellness begins with an open-mind. Be open to learning new skills, embrace new ideas, new cultures, new knowledge, new skills and new environments. An open mind allows you to be better equipped to problem solve, think critically, and be creative.

Embrace and enhance your Intellectual Wellness

  • Be open minded
  • Engage in active listening
  • Explore new things or subjects that you find interesting.
  • Get involved in debates and discussions and challenge yourself to see more than one side of the issue.
  • Watch documentaries and educational channels like National Geographic, History or Discovery channels to enhance your knowledge.
  • Attend sessions regarding health and wellness for tips on how to lead a healthy life.
  • Try a daily meditation. Meditating has been shown to improve concentration and intellectual health.
  • Exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, and get plenty of sleep.
  • Pick up a hobby! Try to learn something new every day.
  • Read! A book, the newspaper, it doesn’t matter. Stimulate your mind.
  • Do puzzles, play chess, write in a journal.
  • Pick up different languages by watching movies or documentaries.
  • Take a 20-minute walk in nature.
  • Travel

The payoff, in addition to improving your brain health, is that you may find yourself living a happier life. Listen to this TEDX talk by Lu Ann Cahn to see how this takes shape.
