All-Natural Homemade Hot Sauce

We are a family that loves our hot sauce, and with many of the store-bought versions full of sugar and added ingredients, I often will make my own.

Super easy, this recipe is full of all-natural ingredients that I feel good about. Because we go through so much, I often will double the recipe and throw extra jars in the freezer or give away as gifts. I honestly don’t know how long they would last in the freezer as we use it up quickly, but I imagine it would be fine for up to a year if tightly sealed. In the fridge I would suggest using it up within a couple of weeks.

Here's my simple recipe:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tsp sea salt or coarse salt
  • ¼ tsp sugar (I use cane sugar)
  • 2+ serrano chillies, seeded and chopped, about ¼ cup. I use Hawaiian chilli peppers – and I use A LOT of them. Around 10. But…like I said – we like it hot!
  • 1 cup packed grated carrots (2-3 carrots)
  • ½ or full apple with skin on
*If you find it is too spicy for you – you can always stir in a little honey at the end as this will cut the spice.

 

 

DIRECTIONS

Combine vinegar with 1tbsp water, salt, and sugar in a wide, shallow saucepan. Set over high heat.

When it comes to a boil, add the chillies, carrots, and apple. Reduce the heat to medium and gently boil, partially covered until the carrots are tender, this can take around 5-10 minutes.

Remove from heat.

Once cooled, pour the mixture into a blender and puree for at least 2 minutes.

Scrape the hot sauce into small jars, cover with lids and refrigerate. 

 

I suggest doubling this recipe as I promise you will love it and wish you had made more!
